The Environment Museum of Stymphalia is located on the slope of one of the verdant hills surrounding Lake Stymphalia where, according to mythology, Hercules confronted and slew the Stymphalian birds.
Its objective is to raise the public’s ecological awareness and preserve the knowledge of the region’s traditional technology.
The first module of the Environment Museum of Stymphalia provides information on the region’s environment and its importance. In the second module, you will discover how the region’s environment influenced the development of human activity, and in particular that of traditional professions.
Driving just 10 minutes from Goura and Olvios Hotel, you will find yourself in the village of Feneos.
Here, the old mansion Constanti Petroulia houses the Folklore Museum. This is a place full of memories that exudes tradition and history! It is an important effort to collect unique objects, held with care and love for the place and preserve its identity.
Within the lake Doxa, on a narrow strip of land, rises the church of St. Fanourios or Paleomonastiro. At this point stood the old monastery of St. George, which moved to its present location – a little higher – in 1693.
It is a monastery with fortress architecture and exceptional frescoes. You cannot leave without tasting the delicious handmade rose sweet offered as a treat by the monks who made it from the roses cultivated in the monastery. The view from the wooden balcony is impressive offering visitors a rare beauty and an another perspective of Doxa Lake.
The museum is located in Ancient Feneo (Kalivia), on the road to Lake Doxa. His exhibits include sculptures, mosaics and pottery found during excavations in ancient Feneos. Among them stands out the marble head of Health, work of the sculptor Attalos Lacharos from Athens.
